There are a large number of nail problems that can occur if you
do not take good care of your nails. And the good news is that
there is a vast amount of information available to you should
you find you suffer from any type of nail
problems.
Some of the most common nail problems
are:
Nail Biting:
otherwise
known as onchyophagy, biting your nails can be a very difficult
habit to break out of. Bitten nails can lead to your
nails growing in a deformed way, they can also lead to bleeding
and discomfort if bitten back too far. They can also cause nails to
become weak and peel, and can also lead to ingrown
nails. Not to
mention that bitten nails generally look very unattractive and
painful. The
only cure for this is to learn to stop biting your
nails. However
this is often easier said than done. There are a variety of bitter
tasting nail applications available, but this doesn’t always
break the habit of biting your nails, and can become expensive
as you often have to continually reapply the product throughout
the day.
Nail Ridges & Furrows:
these can
grow along the nail or across the nail. They feel like small ridges
across the nail, and can be easily visible. The cause is most commonly
such things as poor blood circulation, uses of certain
medications, a lack of vitamins and/or minerals such as
zinc. If you
cannot cure the problem via taking extra vitamins or minerals,
you can get your nails regularly buffed and treaded by a
qualified nail technician to help reduce the furrows and
ridges.
Thick Nails:
also known
as onychauxis.
Most commonly seen with toenails, usually caused by poor nail
care, poor diet and lack of certain vitamins and
minerals. Can
sometimes be hereditary or caused by a nail
infection.
Eggshell Nails:
eggshell
nails are thin nails that are prone to peeling and
breaking. The
nails can be so thin that they begin to curl over the ends of
the skin of the fingers or toes. Growing these sorts of nails
to any length is very difficult as they break very
easily. The best
cure for this nail problem is to regularly use a nail
strengthen, which will over time help to build up the strength
and thickness of the nail. It is also best to keep these
sorts of nails fairly short.
Pytergium:
is a problem
where your cuticles begin to grow over your
nails.
Regular nail care will easily prevent this problem,
including the use of a cuticle oil to soften the cuticle,
and regular trimming of the edge of the cuticle so as to
prevent it from growing too far over the
nail.
Ingrown Nails:
also called
onychocryptosis, it is most commonly found with toe
nails. Poor nail
care and nails being cut, bitten or broken too closely to the
nail bed, or wearing ill-fitting shoes are the most common
causes of ingrown nails. The nail begins to grow into
the corners of the nail bed. This problem can become very
painful and nails can become prone to infection
easily. If this
problem gets too serious the only cure is surgery where the
entire nail may have to be
removed.
